Include your Cub version and build, your device and operating-system version, and a few steps that show what happened. For display issues, include the theme and text size.

Please leave out passwords, verification codes, private libraries, and sensitive screenshots. A disposable example is usually enough to begin.

Keep a copy close

Create a library backup in Settings before a major update, restoring a library, or testing sync with disposable notes. Keep the backup somewhere you can find again.

Library backups contain notes, metadata, attachments, and note history. Protected bodies and attachment bytes stay encrypted; titles, tags, attachment names and other library metadata remain readable. Keep your note passwords separately, because Cub cannot recover a forgotten password.

Automatic backups run while Cub is active. On iPhone and iPad, the system may suspend the app; automatic backups do not promise continuous background work.

Choose the right download

Install Cub on a Mac

The website’s current Mac download is signed and notarized. Open the ZIP, then move Cub to Applications. Check the release information for the installed build’s iCloud and update capabilities.

The direct Mac app keeps its existing library when updated. If you later choose the Mac App Store version, its first-launch choices let you start fresh or explicitly copy a previous Cub library. Quit the previous copy first; the original library remains in place.

Install a beta on an iPhone or iPad

Physical-device beta builds use Apple’s TestFlight app and an invitation. The iOS Simulator ZIP is for developers using Xcode on a Mac; it cannot be installed on a physical iPhone or iPad.

App Store links and public beta invitations will be shown on the Cub website when available.

When a note has not arrived

First check that both installed builds support iCloud. Older local-only previews and the public iOS Simulator preview save locally.

  1. Sign both devices into the same Apple iCloud account through system Settings.
  2. In Cub Settings, enable Sync with iCloud and choose Sync now.
  3. Read any pending or failed status, and check that iCloud has available storage.
  4. Keep the devices connected while attachments finish transferring.

If competing edits create a conflict copy, keep both notes until you have reviewed their text and attachments. Make a backup before trying recovery steps. Changing the iCloud account opens a separate account-scoped library.

Protected notes and shared captures

What does password protection cover?

It encrypts a note’s body and attachments. Titles and tags remain visible, and protected body text and OCR are excluded from the persistent search index.

An optional remembered unlock key stays in this device’s Keychain and uses system authentication. A password remains the fallback. Protection does not change previous exports or older backups; exporting an unlocked note can create a readable copy.

Where is an item saved with Save to Cub?

Open Cub once, then choose Save to Cub in another app’s share sheet. Save the capture, reopen Cub, and check Inbox. You may need to enable the extension in the system share sheet’s available actions.

Settings shows waiting or failed captures and offers retry. New captures begin as unprotected notes, and a capture for another account-scoped library waits for that library. Keep the original item until import is confirmed.

Make the notebook work for you

Use light or dark themes, adjustable writing size, native text selection, and Markdown source mode. Keyboard shortcuts provide another way around the notebook.

See Cub accessibility information for common shortcuts and the reviewed scope, or the privacy policy for notes, iCloud, updates, and information you send to support.
